in the town of Sorrento on Italy's Amalfi Coast, there is a quaint little pizzeria called Pizzeria Aurora. it's a family owned establishment, part of another neighboring restaurant.
the menu at Pizzeria Aurora is vast, filled with your typical Italian fare. we arrived there after a day touring Pompeii, was in need of a good sit and good food. feeling a bit tired and indecisive, we asked our waiter to make a recommendation for 2 pizzas. he suggested the margherita and the house special.
the house special consisted of mozzarella cheese, sauteed mushrooms, thinly sliced strips of prosciutto and hefty chunks of pecorino. it's drizzled ever so carefully with olive oil.
but that's not all.
one third of the pizza's dough was rolled to form a calzone. the calzone's chamber housed a healthy serving of ricotta cheese, chunks of fresh ham and fresh basil.
the house special, quite simply, is the best pizza i've ever eaten. every bite had such savory flavor. my taste buds were in a state of euphoria. the combination of ingredients were perfect. it was cooked to the ideal crispy temperature in Pizzeria Aurora's vintage wood burning stove. i was in a state of gastronomical bliss.
if you ever find yourself in Sorrento in the summer months, perfect temperature, clear blue sky, sunglasses on, grab a seat outside at Pizzeria Aurora, order up some grande birras and order the house special.
you may never want to eat pizza in the states again.
